Safety
Delegation
Safe assignment of tasks based on scope, competence, and accountability.
Delegation assigns a task to another team member while the nurse retains accountability for the overall plan of care. Safe delegation considers scope of practice, competence, patient stability, and communication of expected outcomes.
Unstable patients and tasks requiring nursing judgment generally remain with the registered nurse. Routine data collection or activities of daily living may be appropriate for assistive personnel when policy and training allow.
Exam answers often fail when they delegate assessment, teaching that requires clinical judgment, or evaluation of response to critical interventions.
