Test-Taking Techniques

Methods for reading stems, eliminating options, and managing time.

Strong test-taking begins with careful stem reading. Identify what the question is truly asking—assessment, priority action, teaching, or evaluation—before looking at options.

Eliminate clearly unsafe or unrelated choices first. Then compare remaining options against the scenario data, not against what you wish the patient presentation included.

Manage time by setting a sustainable pace and flagging only a limited number of items for review. Changing answers is reasonable when you find a concrete reason, not when anxiety alone pushes you to second-guess.
